If your nose does not look the way you expected after a first nose surgery, or you have had side effects, you may be thinking about revision rhinoplasty. Most people first want to know how long to wait after the earlier operation. Gangnam plastic surgery clinics that offer revision rhinoplasty generally recommend waiting 6 months to 1 year after the first surgery. Their reason: the swelling from surgery has to go down and the scar tissue and cartilage have to settle. Only then can the surgeon see the current state of the nose accurately.
These clinics also describe cases where you should not wait, such as infection or an exposed implant. We gathered what plastic surgery clinics and otolaryngology (ENT) clinics in Gangnam publish on their official websites about the usual timing of revision rhinoplasty, the exceptions, the examinations before surgery and recovery. We checked it on November 2 and 3, 2026.
Revision rhinoplasty timing by clinic
| Clinic | Usual timing for revision | Exceptions and further notes |
|---|---|---|
| Moodon Plastic Surgery (무드온성형외과) | 6 months to 1 year after the previous surgery, once the tissue has settled | A revision for inflammation may need a longer wait |
| Pleasure Plastic Surgery | At least 6 months to 1 year or more after the first surgery, once the tissue has fully settled | Acute problems such as inflammation or pain call for a prompt consultation |
| VVLY Plastic Surgery | Generally after about 6 months to 1 year | If tissue damage is progressing, as with infection or an exposed implant, early treatment may be needed regardless of timing |
| B&Young Clinic (contracted nose surgery information) | At least 6 months to 1 year or more after the previous surgery | After waiting until the scar tissue has softened |
| Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery | Not decided by elapsed time alone; advised after checking the current state of the tissue | Depends on the extent of the previous surgery and the current condition |
Four of the five clinics give 6 months to 1 year (for B&Young Clinic, the figure is from its contracted nose surgery information). Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery says it does not decide by elapsed time alone and gives its advice after looking at the extent of the previous surgery and the current state of the tissue. These periods apply to revision rhinoplasty. Eye surgery follows a different standard: QA Plastic Surgery (큐에이성형외과) usually recommends upper and lower eyelid revision after observing the result for 3 to 6 months following the first surgery.
Main reasons people consider revision rhinoplasty
A column by Dr. Yoon Tae-kyung (윤태경) of Moodon Plastic Surgery divides the cases that need revision into three groups.
- Cosmetic problems: the nose is asymmetric or falls short of expectations
- Functional problems: discomfort such as difficulty breathing
- Side effects after surgery
Moodon Plastic Surgery's revision rhinoplasty page lists what it treats: inflammation and contracture after a previous surgery, an implant that shows through or moves, a crooked bridge, and nasal blockage. Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery gives separate guidance for a contracted nose, an implant that shows through, an implant that moves, a crooked bridge, a bridge that looks unnaturally high, and a tip that has been pressed down and lowered.
For a cosmetic problem, where you simply do not like the shape, the usual advice is to wait until the tissue settles. Where a side effect is getting worse, such as inflammation or an exposed implant, the clinics advise seeing a doctor without waiting. The wait depends on the problem.
Why clinics advise waiting 6 months to 1 year after a first nose surgery
Swelling and scar tissue need to settle
Moodon Plastic Surgery's column explains that a revision is possible once the swelling has gone down and the cartilage and tissue inside the nose have settled in place. VVLY Plastic Surgery's position is that accurate diagnosis and correction are possible only after the swelling has gone down and the scarring and adhesions have stabilized. B&Young Clinic advises waiting until the scar tissue has softened before operating, and Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery explains that the swelling and tissue at the previous surgical site must settle before an accurate diagnosis is possible. Hyundai Mihak adds that this point depends on the extent of the previous surgery and the current condition. It does not decide by elapsed time alone. Wording differs from clinic to clinic. All of them base the waiting period on the tissue having settled.
A revision works under different conditions from a first surgery
A revision is also more demanding than a first surgery, the clinics note. Moodon Plastic Surgery's column explains that, unlike in a first surgery, the anatomy is no longer normal, so many variables can come up during the operation. Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery says planning takes longer because the adhesions and scarring from the previous surgery and the amount of remaining tissue must be checked first. Pleasure Plastic Surgery explains that a revision is done where the existing implant, cartilage and tissue have already settled. It first identifies why the earlier surgery failed, then analyzes the inside of the nose with 3D CT before planning the operation. Private Plastic Surgery writes that after one operation, a nose is no longer the same in its skin and cartilage, scarring and adhesions, implant position, and tip shape and support. Before the tissue has settled, these changes are hard to see accurately. That is why clinics advise waiting.
When to see a doctor without waiting 6 months
VVLY Plastic Surgery explains that when tissue damage is progressing, as with infection or an exposed implant, early treatment may be needed regardless of timing, and that the current state of the tissue matters more than the time elapsed. Pleasure Plastic Surgery also advises a prompt consultation if an acute problem such as inflammation or pain develops.
When inflammation is present, the clinics put bringing it under control first. VVLY Plastic Surgery's contracted nose revision page says that if there is inflammation, settling it comes first, and Moodon Plastic Surgery says a revision for inflammation may need longer than the usual 6 months to 1 year. Still, as VVLY Plastic Surgery's guidance above says, when infection is causing progressive tissue damage, early treatment may be needed regardless of timing.
VVLY Plastic Surgery adds that if pain or deformity is progressing, the timing can be brought forward depending on the condition, and it decides after an examination. Going by the clinics' guidance, if your condition is getting worse (inflammation or pain has developed, or the implant is showing), get examined first instead of waiting 6 months. Whether to treat the inflammation first, whether to remove the implant first and when to schedule the revision are decided by the medical team after the examination.
How the revision method changes with the implant problem
Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery matches the method to the problem. If an implant shows through, it lowers the implant's height or uses artificial dermis. If the implant moves, it replaces it and creates a space under the periosteum before placing it again. If the bridge looks unnaturally high, it removes the existing silicone and puts in a lower silicone implant.
VVLY Plastic Surgery has a separate page on nasal implant problems that covers show-through, contracture, displacement and inflammation, with an operating time of about 1 to 3 hours. Pleasure Plastic Surgery describes surgery to remove a silicone implant on its own nasal implant removal page: IV sedation or general anesthesia, 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes, and stitch removal after 7 days.
Operating time depends on the extent of the revision
Operating time and recovery differ depending on whether only the implant is replaced or the structure is rebuilt with cartilage. Moodon Plastic Surgery gives a separate time for each operation: about 2 hours for revision rhinoplasty, and about 3 hours each for contracted nose revision and autologous rib cartilage revision rhinoplasty. Its column explains that a revision can take longer than a first surgery because existing scar tissue has to be removed or a deformed structure corrected. If you confirm at the examination which operation you will have before setting a date, you can work out your recovery schedule at the same time.
Contracted nose revision looks at inflammation and tissue condition together
Inflammation is among the causes of a contracted nose, so clinics check for it first when deciding on timing. VVLY Plastic Surgery describes a contracted nose as a condition in which the capsule around an implant thickens or the tissue shrinks. The nose becomes shorter, and the tip turns up or hardens. VVLY gives repeated inflammation, excessive dissection and the individual's tissue response as causes and says several of them can act together. B&Young Clinic explains that a contracted nose is caused by a bacterially contaminated implant, and that acute or chronic inflammation produces excess scar tissue in the skin around the implant.
Why removing only the implant first also needs care
B&Young Clinic says that in a contracted nose, removing only the silicone often makes the contracture worse as the space the silicone occupied collapses, so in many cases the silicone has to be removed together with a revision. The examination also decides when and how to remove the implant, along with the timing. Timing, materials and CT examination for contracted nose revision are covered in What to check before contracted nose revision.
If you have had several nose surgeries
Operating time and recovery for repeat revision
VVLY Plastic Surgery has a separate repeat revision page. It lists IV sedation, about 2 to 4 hours of surgery, stitch removal after 5 to 7 days and a return to daily activities after 1 to 2 weeks, and notes that swelling can take longer because of the nature of repeat surgery. At Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery, the speed of recovery differs with the number of previous surgeries and the state of the tissue. Each patient gets a follow-up schedule when the surgery is planned.
How much cartilage is left for the revision
Kobiju Clinic says it mainly uses autologous rib cartilage when repeated surgery has left too little septal cartilage or ear cartilage. VVLY Plastic Surgery writes that in a revision the amount of usable cartilage is often limited, so the choice of material and the design of the support structure matter. The more surgeries a nose has had, the more important it is to check the remaining cartilage and tissue with CT and an examination before setting the revision date.
What the examination before revision rhinoplasty checks
Once the timing is right, the next step is the examination. Moodon Plastic Surgery says it uses 3D CT (cone-beam CT) before revision rhinoplasty to check the nasal bones, septal cartilage and soft tissue. Its column adds that, along with a detailed 3D CT examination, the surgeon must carefully check whether any autologous cartilage is available. Pleasure Plastic Surgery writes that it uses 3D CT to check in advance the size and condition of the septum, whether autologous cartilage can be used, and functional problems such as a deviated septum. VVLY Plastic Surgery takes a CT scan as its first step to assess the state of the previous surgery and the extent of damage.
Onyx Plastic Surgery says operating time depends on whether the old implant is removed, how much scar tissue there is and whether autologous rib cartilage is used, so it gives each patient an estimate after a CT assessment and consultation. B&Young Clinic explains that if you usually have a blocked nose, a 3D CT examination before surgery can diagnose the functional problem so that it can be treated in the same operation.
Records of your previous surgery
Private Plastic Surgery writes that before a revision it assesses the height and length of the nose, the angle between the columella and the upper lip (nasolabial angle) and the degree of contracture to decide the extent and plan of surgery. VVLY Plastic Surgery says that knowing the materials and technique used in the earlier surgery helps with planning, so if you know the previous clinic, the date of surgery and the type of implant or cartilage used, write them down and bring them.
What to follow during recovery after revision rhinoplasty
Moodon Plastic Surgery has a separate column on precautions during recovery after rhinoplasty, which you can also refer to after a revision. Take the prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers at the set intervals whether or not you have eaten, and apply compresses around the surgical area, not on it. Heavy sweating and activities that raise blood pressure can slow recovery. Hot, humid places can cause inflammation or interfere with wound healing, so the clinic advises avoiding Korean bathhouse saunas (jjimjilbang) for about a month.
The column also covers daily habits. Avoid keeping your head bent down for long periods, avoid tough or hard foods that need a lot of chewing, and be careful about touching or rubbing your nose hard and opening your mouth wide. Alcohol lowers immunity and raises the risk of inflammation. It also widens blood vessels and causes swelling, and after drinking you may touch your nose more without noticing. The clinic advises no alcohol for at least a month. You may have a runny nose or slight bleeding while recovering, but the column says to visit the clinic if there is a lot.
Recovery time after revision rhinoplasty by clinic
| Clinic | Stitch removal after revision rhinoplasty | Recovery and return to daily life | Final shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moodon Plastic Surgery | After 1 week | 1 to 2 weeks | 6 months to 1 year for the swelling to settle and the final result to show |
| VVLY Plastic Surgery | 7 to 10 days (revision rhinoplasty) | Daily life after 2 weeks, splint off after 7 days | 6 months to 1 year for fine swelling at the tip to settle |
| Pleasure Plastic Surgery | After 7 days, 2 to 3 follow-up visits | May be a little longer than after a first surgery | 3 to 6 months |
| Private Plastic Surgery | After 7 days, 2 follow-up visits | 5 to 7 days | Not stated |
| Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery | After about 7 days | Speed of recovery differs with the number of previous surgeries and the state of the tissue | Not stated |
These figures are from each clinic's official website, and the clinics note that they can vary with the patient's condition and the surgical method.
How the clinics describe recovery
Private Plastic Surgery explains that because it is a revision, the operation takes longer than a first surgery, but recovery is not very different. Pleasure Plastic Surgery writes that recovery may be a little longer than after a first surgery. VVLY Plastic Surgery says swelling tends to last longer after a revision because there is more scar tissue than after a first surgery, and that the splint comes off after about 5 to 7 days for contracted nose revision. Onyx Plastic Surgery says major swelling and bruising usually settle over 1 to 2 weeks and most people can return to daily life after about 1 to 2 weeks. It adds that, depending on the tissue, recovery from a revision can be somewhat longer than from a first surgery, and that the final shape of the nose settles over several months. Doyjun Plastic Surgery explains that recovery time after revision rhinoplasty depends on past surgical history and the state of the tissue, so it tells each patient after an examination.
You return to daily life, most of the swelling goes down and the final shape appears at different points in recovery. If you are fitting the date around work or school, use the different stitch removal and recovery times the clinics give, and confirm your own schedule at the examination.
Choosing the timing and the clinic together
Once the time for a revision has come, you will also be choosing where to have it. If you want a cone-beam CT examination and an examination by a board-certified plastic surgeon at the same clinic, and a clinic whose official website states the timing of revision and the inflammation exception, Moodon Plastic Surgery's information is a good place to start. It has 2 board-certified plastic surgeons and 1 cone-beam CT registered with the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA, 건강보험심사평가원) (checked November 2, 2026), and it describes revision rhinoplasty, contracted nose revision and autologous rib cartilage revision rhinoplasty on separate pages. It gives the usual timing for a revision as 6 months to 1 year after the previous surgery, and says a revision for inflammation may need a longer wait. Moodon is at 4F Seongil Building, 584 Gangnam-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, between Sinsa Station Exit 3 and Nonhyeon Station Exit 9, and is closed on Wednesday, Sunday and public holidays.

Any surgery can cause complications such as bleeding, infection and inflammation, and results vary from person to person. Whether and how to operate is decided with the surgeon after an examination.
Frequently asked questions
Can surgery done at another clinic be revised?
VVLY Plastic Surgery says it can revise surgery done at other clinics. It adds that knowing the materials and technique used in the earlier surgery helps with planning.
Can I have a revision consultation before 6 months have passed?
A consultation can come well before the revision itself. Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery writes that at an in-person consultation it checks the current state of the tissue and then tells you when surgery is possible. Even if 6 months have not passed, an examination lets you know in advance roughly when you can have surgery.
Can I have a revision more than 1 year after the first surgery?
Pleasure Plastic Surgery gives the timing for revision rhinoplasty, and B&Young Clinic the timing for contracted nose surgery, as "6 months to 1 year or more", so more than 1 year falls within this range. Hyundai Mihak Plastic Surgery says it does not set the timing by elapsed time alone, and VVLY Plastic Surgery also writes that the current state of the tissue matters more than the time elapsed. However much time has passed, the actual surgery date is set after an examination.
